Kanab

Campground

Dark Sky RV Resort

Definately a boutique campground.  The whole family is involved in running the campground.  Britt, the one who looked after our dogs when we went to Page, is the primary organizer of the Kanab International Film Festival!  They have a social meet-and-greet every Wednesday (mid-March through sometime in the Fall), and I got to at least be at one of them before we left!  We highly recommend this campground.

Things to see

Antelope Canyon

It is a couple hour drive to Page to see this, but well worth it.  Be sure to get tickets on-line first.

Photos

The Belly Of The Dragon

Cool drainage tunnel that has looks like you are in the belly of a dragon!  This is a quick 15 minute stop.  Dogs allowed.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

What an amazing place.  A must see for any animal lover.  3,700 acres of animal sanctuary!  They have so many types of animals, dogs, cats, birds, goats, horses, pigs, cows, snakes, etc. all available for adoption.  We took a tour that was very informational.  Bonus...they have a cafe that serves a vegetarian meal for $5.  It was really good and we went twice.  Dogs were allowed on the patio of the cafe.

Condor Viewing Site

We stumbled upon this while driving to a hike.  There were volunteers at the site that were happy to share information.  Basically, they release condors and monitor them very closely to ensure they survive.  This isn't a destination by itself, but still interesting.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

Very unique dunes due to their color.  Not a lot to do here, but interesting to see.  Dogs allowed.

Horseshoe Bend

We were here when we stayed in Page, AZ but took a day-trip here again when Camille was visiting.

Kanab

Kanab is certainly one of our favorite places!  Great trails, views, and has a history in several movies.

Photos

The New Wave

Stopped here again on our day-trip from Kanab to Page, AZ.  We tried to get a permit to the iconic Wave trail but were unsuccessful so this was the next best thing!

Photos

Paria Townsite

Old townsite that has amazing views and a huge area to explore.  Dogs allowed.

Photos

Sand Caves

Very cool caves right outside of Kanab.  Check out the pics!  Dogs allowed.

Photos

Toadstools

The title and pictures say it all.  Check them out.  Easy walk to the toadstools.  Dogs allowed.

Photos

Zion National Park

There is a shuttle that takes you to all the trailheads.  Lots of hiking options.  Check out the Angels Landing hike in the hiking section.  No dogs allowed.

Hiking

Angel's Landing (Zion)

"One of the most dangerous hikes in the world".  I would have to agree, although there were plenty of chains to grab onto.  The view from the top is pretty special but getting there was the whole point.  Camille and Mark made it to the top but Barb chickened out when the trail got too narrow and there were no ropes!  Please note you need to enter a lottery and get a permit to be able to hike this trail.  No dogs allowed.

Dinosaur Tracks Trail

Easy, short hike right outside of Kanab.  The dinosaur tracks are easy to spot.  Check out the pics!

Squaw Trail via Kanab City To Connector Trail

A very easy trail to get to just on the north side of Kanab.  It is quite a winding trail but the view of Kanab and the surrounding area was spectacular.  Dogs allowed.

Wire Pass Trail

An easy hike to a slot canyon.  Ladder climbing and rock scrambling are necessary to be able to get through the canyon.  Dogs allowed.

Biking

Roadrunner & Doubletrack Connector

This was a simple set of trails just on the north side of Kanab.  Nothing particularly challenging.

Tilted Mesa Trail System

A great system of trails just a few miles outside Kanab.  Something for all levels of riders.  HUGE parking lot and great views.

Food and Drink

Big Al's Burgers At The Junction

I was craving a burger but ended up having the daily special chicken strip basket.  This is a simple fast-food-ish sort of place.

Photos

Don Beto's Mexican Food

Nothing to write home about.  Here's the problem, though.  They have a nice automated system for telling you when to come pick up your food when you order but it has some major faults.  I was told to "come right now because your food is ready" and when I got there, it wasn't even close to ready so I stood around for 30 minutes.

Photos

Giff's Barbecue

GREAT BBQ!  Located in conjunction with a large gift shop and movie set collection.  We ate here twice!  Mark got a last minute call from the owner to come play music for a busload of travelers.  They told him that they had a fantastic time!

Photos

Havana Cabana The Taste Of Cuba

Had the traditional "cubano" sandwich and it was great.  The Cuban "Rock Beer" tasted like a mixture of Dr. Pepper and vanilla.

Photos

The Soda Fountain

Craving a little dessert, I am glad I found this place.  Great little ice cream shop attached to a general-store.

Photos

Wild Thyme Cafe

Ate here twice!  Fantastic food and fun drinks.  Highly recommend.
